Lunar Blade Radio

Posted in Music, Projects on 2010/02/27 by Dashiell Barlow

First of all, this is what I am writing about. That link may change — the current site is temporary (and badly designed).

So, this is my current major project. I am DJ Tragic Moon – the Head DJ and founder of Lunar Blade.

We’re already broadcasting 24/7 – there is a scheduled time where I (usually) do a live show every day. I’m working on getting web hosting,  a radio server, and other essentials to run this station properly.

In other words, I’m hitting the ground running on this. It’s a hell of a lot of fun, and it’s spectacular that I’ve already got a (n admittedly small) listener base.

If you want to get involved in the project, CONTACT me.  My twitter account, of course, is @DMBarlow, but email is fine, and also quite direct. My main address is dashbarlow[at]gmail[dot]com.

iTweetMyTunes (Review)

Posted in Mac, Music, Software, Twitter on 2010/01/20 by Dashiell Barlow

I recently found a new utility for tweeting my iTunes tracks. This is actually something I’ve been looking around to find for a while, now.

I had been using an inelegant, clumsy, and buggy AppleScript to update my iTunes twitter account (which is @dmbarlowsiTunes, by the way(.

Now? Well, now I’m using a much better solution.

It’s called iTweetMyTunes.

Using iTweetMyTunes is an easy, behind-my-notice experience, which is exactly what I want from a solution for this.

The preference window is the only actual UI that’s associated with the program. Here’s an image of it.

Setup is painless – just put in your Twitter account, choose between Automatic (and a number of minutes) and manual updates.

Automatic will mean that iTweetMyTunes will tweet your song at the mark of however many minutes you chose on the slider.

Manual means that iTweetMyTunes only updates when you click a menu bar item.

I really like this piece of software. It’s well done, it’s painless, it does what it is supposed to.

I do, however, have 2 suggestions for the developer that I feel would improve this little utility.

1 – Add a Automatic per-track option. As in, every time a track change & plays for, say, 20 seconds, send a tweet. That play time is important because often one will flip through songs, and that’s not necessary to tweet.

2 – An option to have this run as a menubar utility. I for one, would prefer to have iTweetMyTunes run up in my menubar. With so little UI, and as a utility, I feel it ought to have that option.

In any case.

If you want to tweet from iTunes, this is the single best solution I have found.

Artists unpaid. Thank MySpace & Imeem.

Reblogged story below. My comments after.

MySpace/Imeem Deal Leaves Thousands of Artists Unpaid | Epicenter | “

By Eliot Van Buskirk

“Independent artists who sold their music through imeem’s Snocap music storefronts on MySpace and other sites won’t be paid what’s owed even after MySpace Music’s acquisition of some — but not all — of imeem”

“Some artists have been owed money for more than a year, and the chance of them seeing any money now is, for all intents and purposes, zero, the source says.”

(Via Wired.)

This is absolutely unacceptable.

And another reason my pending big (for me) music project will not touch MySpace.

We shall see who gets angry over this.

First of all, posts will be a bit sparse today/tommorrow and possibly further on. I’ll be busy until the 1st with various things from a Thanksgiving trip to an allergist appointment (here’s hoping they’re all gone!) to a permit knowledge test.

Yes, I’m working on my license late. I’ve been eligible for a permit for almost 3 years and 6 months now, but quite frankly I didn’t need one in the suburbs of Philadelphia. Now that I am out by Harrisburg and there is a sheer lack of public transportation, the issue is a bit more pressing.

The allergist, well, I’ve had anaphylaxis level allergies to so many things for years and I’m well overdue for an appointment… I am hoping. HOPE WITH ME! Please.

I’m involved in a new business venture, a partnership with a good friend. I can’t say anything yet, it’s far too early, but I will post updates here when I can. It has great potential.

I’ve installed BetterTouchTool and a review is forthcoming. For now the trouble is I’m having quite the time thinking of ways to use it.

My trip starting wednesday… damn. I am very much looking forward to it. NYC! Also, people I haven’t seen in far too long.

Alright, I’m out.

It’s been a long damn time since I published, and that’s something I’ve been grumbling to myself about, so I’m gonna start writing yet again.

I’ve got a pair of trips coming up, and another nebulous largely unplanned trip in February. Next week I will be in NYC to spend Thanksgiving with my Uncle and his wife, both wonderful people. It’s been too long since I was able to enjoy their company. I’m also planning to spend some time with a few old friends in NYC and surrounding areas, will be away until December 1st. The day after Christmas (“Boxing Day”) I’ll be leaving on another trip, this one two weeks long.

Day before I leave I have an appointment with an allergist.. that could be very good (much less) or very bad (status quo). Tommorrow (it’s early Thursday morning as I write this) I have a physical appointment. Ugh. I also have to run around and get paperwork done, pick up envelopes at the P.O.

Why all the paperwork and sudden frenetic activity? Simple.

I moved on short notice the other weekend. Because of various things a particular family member did during that weekend (fuck up my ability to reside where I was(this one happened some weeks before), bite me several times, attempt to steal my passport, sucessfuly steal my phone(goodbye Kyocera TNT), rip up important financial paperwork) I was driven to a choice.

Oh, one last thing on the move. After I was physically attacked and chose to minimally defend myself, the police were called on –me– by this particular family member.

However, the stress level on a daily basis is much lower here. That is a very good thing. I should be able to replace my phone soon.

Onto happier topics.

As far as music goes.. Been listening to Breaking Benjamin / Coldplay / Linkin Park. Of the three, Linkin Park is the marked newcomer. I do think I have a taste for them.

Gadget/Software news:

I’m very happy with my iPod Touch. I made sure to pay for 3.0 and I obtained an Otterbox. 50+ apps later, I will not go back to a click wheel iPod. Especially with my VZW MiFi, I can be connected anywhere without dragging out the MacBook. Favorite app for concept: Tripit. Because my memory is like a colander.

I just downloaded MarsEdit. I’m using it to write this, in fact, and I think I love it. Far better than Qumana. Still have to figure some of it out, but that will happen.

Other news:

I’m joining the 501st, as an Imperial Naval Captain. Very happy on this.

Oh, before I go I’ll treat you to some of my photography.

Good night, good luck, farewell.

Starting Over.. again

Here we go, same blog, another start.

Life has been busy. Romances, music taste changes, classes, new games, new books to read, and more all take over my time, and I have a terrible memory for keeping up with a blog anyway. Still, I rather should be keeping up with this thing.

Adium‘s been having issues, recently, mostly not of a crippling nature. One that really annoyed me was a crash at launch that I couldn’t figure for far too long. Turns out that auto connect on launch with MSN is the culprit, and turning it off works around the issue. Still, it’s annoying. I do hope the development team is aware of that issue.

Music taste’s been expanding too. Been listening to a lot more metal than ever before. Nightwish is especially awesome, HIM & Metallica are also good. But my music taste has been expanding in other ways as well.

I’ve been playing a lot of Half Life. I got Steam to work on my MacBook (and it wasn’t easy) only a few weeks back, but already I’ve been playing a whole lot of Half-Life 2, HL2 Episodes 1 & 2, Portal, Half-Life: Source, Team Fortress 2, and Garry’s Mod. Half-Life 2 is awesome!

In fact the program that allows me to run Steam– which is CrossOver Games by the way, a bit pricey but, in my opinion, quite worthwhile– has proved it’s worth in other ways as well. MUSHclient runs very well for my MUDs, and as my former favorite MU* client is no longer available, this is awesome. I also managed to install Civilization IV: Complete Collection, which I got just recently, and I of course really love. I’ve been a fan of the series since the early days of Civ III.

Been trying to Twitter a lot ( it’s dmbarlow in case you want to follow me ), and I rather like the concept. It’s not always about what you’re doing — I actually find that there are far more valuable uses for it than simply “what am I doing, right now, in 140 characters or less?” Though I do that too, occasionally.

Also working on getting some artwork commissioned up, more word on that later.

That’s it, I’m out.
